As you dive head first into planning your wedding, you will soon discover that food and beverage items will constitute a large portion of your budget.

Besides the price of a meal itself, a wedding cake can be quite expensive – not to mention the cost of any specialty beverages. With all those dollars adding up, any minor substitutions made in this area can translate into major savings. However, you don’t necessarily have to cut your guest list or sacrifice the quality of your dining experience to save some money.

Most venues have special menus just for events and many are three course affairs. Though you might have to choose from these selections, you may not need a dessert course if you are serving a wedding cake.

Ask your venue if you can replace the dessert course with an in-house wedding cake. In my experience many venues are willing to do this, but most couples don’t know to ask. One of my clients in Hawaii was able to save $6 per person by making this substitution and applied the savings toward the price of the wedding cake. Talk about having your cake and eating it too – it was almost as though the cake was free!

This is just one example of a minor substitution that can make a major difference so be sure to ask your venue or caterer if there is anything that might reduce costs without sacrificing quality.

Stay tuned for more money saving tips next week! Happy Planning!
